The Town of Surfside’s oceanfront community recreation facility was commissioned to complement the proposed athletic center. An intensive public process led to an approved Site Master Plan with two separate pools to serve various user groups (swimmers, children, the elderly). The pool deck functions as an extension of the interior athletic center, with its central east-west axis retaining the view to the ocean across the site. The passive park is designed to create a seamless transition from the deck to the dunes and ocean beyond. Native/xeriscape planting and local paving materials were selected for their sustainability and ease of maintenance. The building is being certified as a LEED Silver project.
